Cecils Country Store

Cecils Country Store is located on Indian Bridge Road near the junction with Maryland Route 5 in what has become known as the Cecils Mill Historic District. The four buildings which make up the Historic District were added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 1977.  The mill located across the road is the primary building in the Historic District.  We will look at Cecils Old Mill in the next post.

The General Store dates from 1906 and is currently operated by the Crafts Guild of St. Mary’s County. It features antiques, crafts and gifts from local sources, more details of which can be found here.  For many years the store also housed the Great Mills Post Office.  Five members of the Cecil family have been the postmasters.

The comment on the listing in National Register of Historic Places says that the buildings in the Historic District “are reminders of the passing of an era in the rural life of the County”.  With that in mind, I decided to try to recreate a version of the opening image as if the picture was captured when the building was first constructed.
