Washington Irving’s Sunnyside

Over the last few weekends I have been reprocessing some of my older images using Lightroom 4.  I am in awe at the additional details and amazing clarity that can be drawn from the original RAW files. Its not just the newer files which benefit from the wonderful processing ability of this new version of Lightroom.

Washington Irving, one of America’s first great writers and still one of the best loved for short stories based on life in the Hudson Valley such as “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle“, bought an estate on the banks of the Hudson River in 1835.  At the time the residence was a simple farmhouse built in the seventeenth century when the land still was part of the nearby Philipsburg Manor.  After Irving purchased the property he immediately began to remodel the house to create his own romantic vision with the help of George Harvey, an artist and neighbor whose own home Irving much admired.  When finished it looked almost exactly as can still be seen today with wonderful weather vanes taken from old houses in New York City and Albany, Dutch-stepped gables and a wisteria vine over the front door.  Irving himself described it as “a little, old-fashioned stone mansion all made up of gabled ends, and full of angles and corners as an old cocked hat”.  It is definitely all of that and perfectly describes Sunnyside.

  1. Very nicely composed and processed Mark. LR4 is pretty amazing. The clarity slider gives almost a HDR feel to images (in a good way).

  2. Beautiful image, Mark. Very nice processing and tonal presentation. Love the realistic color.

  3. Beautiful image Mark. I haven’t switch over to LR4 yet but I’m planning too.

  4. Like you, I find LR4 to be a marked improvement over the previous version.

You have processed this to perfection with great color and detail.

  5. I must give LR4 a try and upgrade from my LR3. The detail you’ve pulled out shows up in the clouds. Nice job Mark.
