Colored Glass Door, Ca’ d’Zan Mansion, Ringling Museeum

Recently I was in Sarasota, Florida and had the opportunity to visit the Ca’ d’Zan Mansion Ringling Museum.  This is John and Mable Ringling’s Venetian Gothic style mansion built in 1924/25 overlooking Sarasota Bay. The architectural style is based on the hotels and palaces which face onto the canals in Venice. With all of its finely carved details and unique architectural features, this amazing building, along with the other parts of the complex is a photographer’s dream.

Most of the windows in the mansion are made up of individual rectangles of different colored glass.  This photograph, looking out through a door to the kitchen area, shows not only the many different colors but also the unevenness of the finish of each panel as shown by the way none of the lines outside the door line up from one panel to the next.

The John Ringling Estate as the mansion and surrounding grounds are known is included as part of the Caples–Ringling Estates Historic District which also includes the Charles Ringling Estate  and the Ralph Caples Estate, all of which are located next door to one another along Bayshore Drive in Sarasota.  The Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in December 1982.  Both the Charles Ringling Estate and the Ralph Caples Estate are now part of the campus of New College of Florida.

This shot is almost as it came from the camera with only some minor adjustments to the clarity and vibrance in Lightroom.
