Indian Creek Covered Bridge

Indian Creek Covered Bridge in Monroe County, West Virginia was originally built in 1903. It can be found on US Route 219 about 1.5 miles south of Salt Sulphur Springs.

The bridge was originally built by Ray and Oscar Weikel who at the time were 16 and 18 years old, respectively, and E.P. and A.P. Smith.  The two young men set up their own sawmill near the site preparing all materials but the iron rods, nails and shingles. They also developed their own tool to lift the large timbers into place. The Weikels continued in the lumber business in Monroe and Greenbrier counties for several years after completion of the bridge.

The bridge is of Long Truss design. It is just over 49 feet long and 11-and-a-half feet wide and was built for a cost of $400. It was part of the White and Salt Sulphur Springs Turnpike which connected White Sulphur Springs in Greenbrier County to the Salt Sulphur Springs in Monroe County.  The construction of US Route 219 through the southern portion of Monroe County which meant the covered bridge was no longer needed.

Being one of the latter built covered bridges, it was in continuous use for only about 30 years. The covered bridge underwent a thorough rehabilitation beginning in the spring of 2000 at a cost of $334,446. Quite an increase from the original price! Renovations included timber roof trusses, a new glue-laminated timber deck, new wooden exterior siding and a new roof of split shakes. The bridge is now only open to pedestrian traffic.

Like all the Covered Bridges, the Indian Creek Covered Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  It is one of the 17 covered bridges still in existence in West Virginia including the Hokes Mill and Hern Mill covered bridges.
