Vale United Methodist Church

For today’s and Wednesday’s posts we are going to take a look at two of the older churches close to where I live.  We will start with with a historic white clapboard methodist church which remained unchanged for 60 years and then move on a couple of miles down the road to Falls Church Presbyterian Church.

Vale Methodist Protestant Church, as it was originally named, was founded in 1894.  The first meetings were held in the Vale School.  In November of its founding year, Thomas and John Clark donated property for the new church.  Construction began in the spring of the following year using materials donated by the congregation.

Construction was completed in less than two years, with the church being dedicated in 1896.  The present sanctuary, seen in the image above, is the original building, which was built with lumber donated from Stuart’s Mill.  Up until the 1950’s Vale remained a one room church.  A new wing was added in 1956 providing school rooms, a kitchen and a lavatory.  A further expansion occurred in 1993 when a further extension was added providing a fellowship hall, a new kitchen. offices and additional classrooms.

Vale Church remained a Methodist Protestant Church until the Methodist Protestant, Methodist Episcopal, and Methodist Episcopal South branches united to form “The Methodist Church” in 1939.
