Yellow Trillium (Trillium luteum)

The Yellow Trillium (Trillium luteum) is a member of the Liliaceae or Lily family.  Being the only yellow flowering trillium it is one of the easiest to identify.  It is an erect perennial from 8- to 16-inches tall, rising from a stout rhizome.  The 3 leaves are whorled, sessile, broadly elliptical, mottled, from 3- to 6-inches in length.  The flower is sessile and lemon-scented.  Petals are more or less erect, narrowly to broadly elliptical-obovate, greenish-yellow aging to a rich yellow, more than twice the length of the stamens.  It can be found in rich woods, mainly in the southern Appalachians.  It flowers in April and May.
