Fishermens Terminal is located on Salmon Bay in the Interbay neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, east of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and immediately west of the Ballard Bridge (seen in the background of the image above). Operated by the Port of Seattle, it is home to the Pacific North West fishing fleet including some of the vessels that are on the Discovery Channel show the Deadliest Catch.
Every spring at the start of halibut season, the Seattle fishing community gathers at Fishermen’s Terminal for the annual Blessing of the Fleet, as members of the community gather to honor and pray for the safety of the men and women who harvest the seas.
In 1988, the Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial dedicated a magnificent bronze and stone monument at Fishermen’s Terminal. Thia culminated years of effort and generous contribution by Seattle’s commercial fishing community. This sculpture and the bronze name plaques at its base have become a place of reverence, recognition and healing for the families of more than 675 local commercial fishermen and women who have lost their lives pursuing their livelihood since the turn of the century.

The facility provides freshwater mooring for fishing vessels, and since 2001 pleasure craft. A documentary film Fishermen’s Terminal centers on the conflict between the moorage needs of the fishing fleet and pleasure boaters. Four years in the making, the film tells the story of the commercial fishermen and their supporters who took on the Port and shined a spotlight on the public agency that controls most of Seattle’s waterfront.
Fishermens Terminal can accommodate vessels up to 250 feet (76.2 m). Preference, though, is given to commercial fishing vessels. It serves more than 600 vessels.

As with any harbor the photographic options here are limited only by one’s imagination. From the all encompassing group shots of the first image, the single boat ‘portrait’ as seen in the middle shot, and the many detail extract shots that are there for the taking, Fishermans Terminal offers everything a photographer could wish for.

Wonderful images Mark. These bring back old memories. I love Seattle and haven’t been there in a long time. I think I will try to get there this year.
