The Sotterley Plantation gardens and its 25 outbuildings help add further dimension to the texture of life at this historic site. The recreated formal Colonial Revival style garden is just a small part of the 95 acres of rolling fields, gardens, and riverfront that constitute the overall property.
We visited the slave cabin in the last post but this is not the only building of interest.

The 18th century “necessary” was a well-equipped outhouse for the time, featuring brick walls, multiple seats and a window. Still, other touches like the rear access for cleaning and decorative bins for corncobs (the use of which, as this is a family oriented web-site, I will not go into) are features that today’s visitors will be glad to do without.

A short distance from the gardens stand two small gatehouses, one of which served as a one-room schoolhouse in the 19th century.

Love these images Mark. Really show this location well. Thanks for not describing the corn cobs any further.
