Cecils Old Mill is located on Indian Bridge Road in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. There has been a mill on this site since circa 1820. It is situated on the opposite side of the street to Cecils Country Store which we looked at in the previous post. The present structure has been restored using mostly American saw mill parts dating from 1910. The mill has not operated since the fatal injury of H. Robb Cecil in April 1959. The restoration was completed in 1987 by William J. “Bill” Clements. It has since been further restored, including a new water wheel and reopened on April 1, 2011.

The actual mill structure does not offer very much for the photographer but inside is a completely different story. In every alcove and corner there are displays of old equipment and artifacts linked to the mill when it was operational. The possibilities are endless and offer themselves to a number of different treatments from the urbex look of the first image, through the sepia toned monochrome of the second, to the more straight-forward HDR treatment of the image below.

The water wheel, although fully operational and switched on for my benefit, is of a modern design and did not offer anything photographically. However, there were some interesting displays outside the mill as can be seen from the next two images.
