Rodder’s Journal, a magazine for the hot rod enthusiast, held their second annual Vintage Speed & Custom Revival at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on September 28 and 29. The day before they had a day time cruise to Havre de Grace on the banks of the Susquehanna River. It was here that I found this exceptional 1934 Lake-Style Ford Coupe Hot Rod belonging to George Poteet. George is an avid Hot Rod collector as can be seen in this photo collection.
Built by the Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop in New York, this hot rod is as near to a salt flats racer as it is possible to have whilst keeping it street legal. Although perfectly safe to use on the street, this car has been raced on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It is only 54-inches tall making it one of the lowest and sleekest hot rods I have ever seen.

As you will note from the lack of shine, this car is not a show model. It was built to be driven. In fact, George actually drove this car from his home in New York to the Bonneville Salt Flats rather than trailer it as many would have done. I found an article from 2013 which said this car had over 50,000 miles on it. I wonder how far it has been driven by now.

That is a stunning Hot Rod. Years ago – must be 30 – we used to go to the Santa Pod Raceway just east of Northampton: one of the few tracks in the UK where Hot Roads and Dragsters raced.Superb photography, Mark.

Thanks, Jimi. I confess to have missed the actual event at Pimlico due to other commitments. This was why I took the trip out on the Friday to see what I could find. I am going to have to make an effort to attend the actual event next year, especially after see the cars I did at Havre de Grace.
