Detail of the chassis and rear wheel of Central of Georgia Number 223, a 1907 Baldwin C-3 Class 2-8-0 at the Roundhouse Railroad Museum in Savannah, Georgia.

This image is from a five bracket HDR set.  When I processed the brackets, the image did not live up to my hopes.  I decided to take just the middle image and push the contrast and clarity in Lightroom to bring out the details.  A couple of globally applied presets from Prefect Effects from OnOne Software – “Golden Hour Enhancer” and “Arkham” – were all that were needed to provide the gritty look I was after.  These presets were both toned down to approximately 50% opacity.  An Acid Wash frame from Perfect Frame completed the look.

The transformation is not as major as the last two images posted – Mitchell’s Folly  and The Basin Bath House  – but I thought it worth showing the original to illustrate just how effective a couple of the Perfect Effects presets can be.

  1. Great detail and composition, Mark. The effects really enhance the image Nicely done!

  2. Never saw a train I didn’t like and this one cannot change that. 🙂

Very nice processing on this image, Mark. Great details and I like this bronze-like finish on the locomotive. The white-wall trim on the wheel adds a nice contrast as well.

  3. I’m starting to get a greater appreciation for the older trains. They are such marvels of engineering, not to mention fun to shoot. Great job on the processing. I recently got Perfect Effects, but haven’t had a chance to dig in yet.
