A couple of weeks ago we revisited the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland. Whilst I was waiting for the steam locomotive to arrive I wandered around the historic depot. No matter the main attraction that takes you to something like a tourist train station, it is always worth taking some time to slowly explore the surroundings. As I was walking along the station platforms I found these two railroad baggage carts chained to a support pillar of the overhead canopy.
It was the symmetry of the two baggage carts which first drew my attention. A very simple composition in itself, but the background of the rusty box car which a graffiti artist had started to work on creating his colorful unauthorized paint scheme was an added bonus.
If this boxcar had not been in the station I doubt I would have created this image. Behind the rail line the boxcar is sitting on is a concrete wall to provide the background and it would not have given me either the additional interest in the image but also would not have generated such an interesting contrast to the colors of the baggage carts.
